Coach - Frank Salcido
USA HOCKEY COACHES CERTIFICATION - ADVANCE (LEVEL 4)
Frank Salcido brings a wealth of hockey knowledge and experience to the L.M.U. Ice Hockey program. A California native, Frank began his hockey days 43 years ago when he started playing youth hockey for the Bay Harbor Redwings. As a youth hockey player, he was a member of several State Championship teams and was a member of the L.A. Jr. Kings team that reached the semi-final game at the 1975 Jr. B National Championship tournament.
Frank coached for the Redwings from 1975-78 while playing at the semi-pro level for the Los Angeles Bruins of the Pacific Southwest Hockey League. After winning several championships with the Bruins, Frank began coaching again in 1990 with the Marina Cities Sharks.
During his coaching career, Frank has coached at every level of youth hockey, winning several State and District championships. While with the West Valley Wolves, he took teams in consecutive years to the National Championship Tournament, where his Pee Wee Tier II team earned a Silver Medal in 1998. For many years, he coached elite level summer and select teams, participating in such notable tournaments as The Brick, Quebec Pee Wee Tournament, and the Chicago Showcase High School Tournament. Frank has also served as an instructor at elite prospect camps, USA Hockey coaching clinics, and as a rater at the CAHA and Pacific District Select camps. He is also a former member of the CAHA Board of Directors.
Most recently, Frank has been the head coach of the L.A. Jr. Kings U16 AAA team and Assistant Coach of the L.A. Jr. Kings U18 AAA team. During his coaching tenure, he has had the privilege to work with current NHL assistant coach Ray Bennett, former NHL veteran Nelson Emerson and former USHL coach Jack Bowkus. In 2006, while coaching with Coach Emerson, the Jr. Kings U18 AAA team advanced to the semi-final round of the National Championship tournament.
A veteran of 30 years in law enforcement, Frank brings a no-nonsense, disciplined approach to the game, teaching his players life lessons through the sport of hockey. He has coached several players who have moved on to play at the junior, college, and professional levels. His son Brian played at Shattuck-St. Mary’s Prep, where he won a National Championship with such notable names as Sidney Crosby and Jack Johnson. Brian also played NCAA Division I hockey at Colorado College and was fortunate enough to be drafted by the Anaheim Ducks in 2005. He just concluded his second season of professional hockey with the Ducks top affiliate in Portland, Maine, where he set a franchise record for assists and points by a defenseman and was named to the AHL All-Star team.
Frank received his Bachelor of Science degree in 1977 from California State University, Long Beach and his Juris Doctor from Loyola Law School in 1988. A member of the State Bar of California, Frank retired in 2007 as a Captain with the Beverly Hills Police Department and is now practicing law part-time while continuing to coach with the Jr. Kings. Frank resides with his wife Mary Ann in the South Bay.
