Lions Upset Seventh Ranked SDSU...
The Lions trailed by three goals at the start of the third, but won the third period 3-0, and won the game in the first shift of overtime to upset the seventh ranked SDSU Azteks. Jim McDonald scored the OT winner, his second of the game, and the Lions were able to celebrate their third big upset of the season. This was also important, as it counts toward the LMU WCHC rankings. Other Lions with goals were DelBuono, Costin and Keomanee-Dizon. The Lions got 3 of a possible 4 points this weekend, and will look to continue with this momentum as they travel to UNLV this coming weekend for a two game set.
1/13/12
Last Second Rally Leads to Loss...
The Lions started the final game of the season vs. USC on the wrong foot, letting in three goals on the first six shots. After quickly rebounding, the Lions worked their way back over the next two periods, eventually taking the lead with 4 minutes to go. After killing off a last minute penalty, the Lions had the Trojans pinned down in their end with 30 seconds to play. USC gained control, and pulled the goalie and scored on a long shot with just three seconds to play. The game went through OT, and to a shootout, where the only goal scored was in the fifth round by USC. This is the first year since 2008 the Lions have been swept by USC, and LMU swept USC last season. Goals by Hyman, Indigaro, McDonald and Costin, but the Lions couldn't hang on and suffered the Shootout Defeat. They lions will look to rebound on Saturday as they face SDSU with the puck drop at 3:30 PM.

Back to Work...
Welcome back to ice hockey. After their month long winter hiatus, the LMU Lions are back to work this week. With school starting, so does the strong and important second stanza of the season. There isn't much time to get back in the swing of things, as LMU faces two of thier biggest SoCal rivals this week. Thursday night, LMU takes on USC in the final game between the two. USC previously swept a weekend vs LMU, and the Lions are looking to reverse the trend. Saturday brings the SDSU Aztecs to LMU, for the second and final regular season game. SDSU, who is ranked in the top 6 of the west, held tough for a 6-4 win in their previous meeting. Come cheer the Lions on Thursday at 8:15 PM and Saturday at 3:30 PM.
12/3/11
Strong Finish to Semester...
The Lions continued their strong play of late, beating CSUF 8-4. In what was a strong team outting, freshman Jack Hyman stood out, netting 4 goals. In the previous meeting the Lions offense was stymied on the way to a 6-2 loss, but that was far from the case this night. LMU scored early and always led, with the goals from Hyman, 2 from McDonald, 1 from Keomanee-Dizon and 1 from Trevor Isbell. The Lions have been playing great hockey in the second half of the semester, beating SJSU and NAU, two highly ranked teams, among many other wins. Just as the team got going, they'll enter their month long finals and holiday break. But before you know it, the Lions will be back at home trying to salvage a game against USC, on January 12. Have a safe holiday season, and see you in January. Go Lions!
11/17/11
Lions In Form...
The one bad game didn't keep the Lions from getting back to playing well, and they did just that tonight, upsetting fifth ranked NAU at home 5-4. The Lions looked sluggish at the start, but won the 2nd and 3rd periods, and scored the game winning goal with three minutes remaining to stun the Ice Jacks. This is the highest ranked team the Lions have ever beaten. The Lions were led by strong goaltending in sophomore Vittorio Banez, and the top line of Kevin Keomanee-Dizon, Jim McDonald and Jack Hyman led the way down the stretch. The come from behind win was even more important as it was a WCHC conference game. NAU easily won the first two meetings of the year, but the Lions have improved greatly since then, and are beginning to hit their stride. If you missed this exciting game, catch the entire game HERE. LMU has next weekend off, and returns for their final game of the semester, at home, against CSU Fullerton.
11/12/11
Lions Offense Sputters...
If 11/11/11 was supposed to be lucky, 11/12/11 was far from it for the Lions who dropped their game against CSU Fullerton 6-2. Senior Tyler Payne got the start and was solid throughout, but the Lions couldn't beat the CSUF goalie, and didn't muster enough good scoring opportunities. This ends the run of good games by the Lions who were 2-1 in their last three games, with the close loss coming against seventh ranked SDSU. The injury bug should be letting up this week as the Lions are expecting back 4 players for this weeks game against NAU, their third game of the season.
11/11/11
Who Was in Net?...
It wasn't a game that LMU hoped to have happen, but a plethora of injuries led the Lions to dress forward (and he'll tell you former goalie) Nick DelBuono as goalie. With less than 3 full lines, the Lions played one of their most complete games this season, as they fell to Seventh ranked SDSU 6-4. With enough excuses available, the Lions dug in deep, and while sticking to their system were able to play a close game, while out chancing SDSU for large portions of the game. SDSU's goalie played well in the first two periods, keeping the Lion's at bay. But the big star of the game was DelBuono who looked strong, even shutting SDSU out in the third, a period the Lion's won 2-0. Lion's head to CSUF tonight to take on the Titans.
11/6/11
Battling Lions Split Weekend...
LMU certainly had their work cut out for them this weekend. Four games in as many days, and a short bench due to midterms. But the Lions battled hard, splitting the weekend with a wins over Stanford and Santa Rosa and a hardfought loss to San Jose State. Their third game of the weekend, the Lions jumped out to an early 4-0 lead, and played back and forth with SRJC as the Lions prevailed 8-5. Then less than 10 hours later the Lion's still had legs as they peppered the Stanford goalie all game, and won 6-2. The Lions who continue to gel together are looking to keep this momentum moving ahead as they face a tough road weekend coming up, as they travel to SDSU and CSUF, both WCHC conference games.
11/3/11
Staples Center Game to be Rescheduled...
The Lions game this coming week at Staples Center vs. UCLA will be rescheduled. Stay tuned for a new date to be announced in the coming weeks. The Lions are currently in San Jose playing 4 games at the San Jose Classic.
10/30/11
Lions Fall in Heartbreaker...
The Lions fought back at every turn, tying USC late in the game twice, but ended up falling to USC 6-5 in regulation. LMU now looks to an important weekend as they travel to San Jose to play 4 games. This weekend is an important stepping stone in turning the season around for LMU, who has had a very slow start. The weekend starts Thursday night vs. Oregon at 9:30 PM. Stream live HE
10/28/11
Lions Offense Outshined by USC Goalie...
The Lions, donning their LMU at 100 Navy Jerseys, came out fast against USC. Fueled by the largest crowd of the season, the team was skating fast and outplaying the USC team, though the scoreboard never verified this was the case. With LMU outshooting USC 47-17, including 18 shots in the third period, the Lions were only able to slip two goals past the USC goalie, who stood his ground and played well the entire game. USC scored an empty net goal, and beat the Lions 5-2. The Lions won't have to wait long for redemption, as they head to USC tonight to play game 2 of the Century Cup.
10/15/11
Big Third Sparks Huge Win Over SJSU...
The SJSU Spartans led by two for most of the game, with LMU making some of the same mistakes that had hurt the Lions in their first few games of the season. Even with another slew of second period penalties, the Lions held tough and were down by two heading into the third period. LMU hung tough, and Jim McDonald led the Lions in the third with 2 goals to tie the game with only a few minutes remaining. Penalty troubles didn't go away, and LMU had to kill a 5-3 in the final minutes and into OT. Sophomore goalie Vitto Banez held strong, making a diving glove save with thirty seconds to go in the game to force the game into a shootout. The first four LMU shooters all scored, and Banez let in only one, giving LMU their first ever victory over San Jose State, and one of the top five victories in program history. Besides McDonalds two goals, Brian McNulty also tallied two goals in the game, and senior Pat McBride scored early. The Lions will use this momentum as they head into an important WCHC game next weekend CSULB. If you missed the game, watch the entire, exciting game HERE.
10/23/11
No Show Lions Suffer Lopsided Loss...
The Lions suffered another lopsided loss at the hands of CSU Long Beach on Saturday night. The same story for the Lions, who took too many penalties and let mental mistakes lead to easy scoring opportunities for Long Beach as the Lions fell 9-3. It seems much longer than a week ago that the Lions rallied to beat San Jose at home. The Lions need to find that mojo again, as they have a tough and important home and home series this coming weekend against USC. The first game is at home, Thursday night when LMU celebrates it's Centennial with the LMU@100 Hockey game, which is also the first game of this season's Century Cup vs. USC. Free Bus from campus for the 8:15 Puck drop.
10/14/11
Lions Penalties Lead to Trouble...
The NAU IceJacks made their way to LMU for the first of two games this season, and LMU was ready to avenge their early season loss at NAU. Jack Hyman scored first on a nifty give and go with Brian McNulty. That was all the good for awhile, as NAU scored 6 goals in the second, most of which involved a Lion in the penalty box. Though the second period was an issue, the Lions came out strong in the third period, scoring two goals early. Mental mistakes have been harming the Lions, but they will look to rebound this coming Saturday, a 3:30 PM start against San Jose State. See you at the rink, or stream live HERE.
10/8/11
No Warm Welcome...
When UCLA cancelled on LMU, Chapman University was gracious enough to step in on short notice. The Lion's, however, were not nearly as gracious back. On the home opening night, and a night when the team celebrated the teams original founder, Tom Leib, the Lions gave Chapman no chance, beating the Panthers 16-4. With first goals from Jack Hyman, Sean Dudley and first goals of the season by Cody Wolterman, the Lions powered through the new Chapman team. It seems home is sweet, as all four of the Lion's games thus far have gone to the home team. LMU hopes this trend continues with 2 very tough games this coming week. A chance at revenge on Thursday vs. NAU, and the always powerful SJSU visits Saturday afternoon.
10/5/11
Looking Ahead...
LMU's weekend sweep behind them, the Lions look ahead to their home opener vs. Chapman University this Friday @ 6PM. The Lion's are starting the first of 3 home games in a row, hoping their rink brings them better luck. See you this Friday at the home opener.
10/1/11
Slow Start Dooms Lions in Opener...
LMU's slow start at NAU in the season opener turned out to doom the team, as they fell 10-3 to NAU. In a first period where the Lions were caught running around, NAU capitalized five times, and never looked back. Scoring for the Lions were captain Jim McDonald, Michael Indigaro and scoring his first goal as a Lion, Nick DelBuono. The Lions will have no time to reflect, as they head to Tempe to take on ASU tonight at 9:30 PM. Watch the Live Stream HERE.

Celebrating Seniors...
Nick Cruz and Collin O'Malley both had strong games as their LMU hockey careers came to an end. The Lion's faced a red hot ASU team who had won seven consecutive games, and came back from 4th place to win the WCHC, and LMU dropped their final game of the season 8-4. O'Malley was tested often and stood strong, turned away a constant assault of ASU shots. Cruz was at true form, controlling the puck along the boards and getting it to the net, with two assists in the game. Freshman Trevor Isbell netted two goals and the Lion's kept it close through two periods, but ASU was too strong in the third and took control of the game. The Lion's want to thank our two seniors for their great effort and commitment over the past four years. The Lion's will face off against their own, as the alumni are back in town next weekend with a Saturday game, February 19 at 6:10 pm. Admission is free, come see some old faces.
Thanks to Sharkees for sponsoring Senior Night.

Lion's Offense Turns Hot...
In what is becoming a regular for the Lion's, they once again took on a team at their Senior Night. And once again this season, they beat the home team to ruin their Senior Night. This time the Lions took on Fullerton, who had won the first two in the series this season. The Lion's top line was in full form, with a 9 goal outburst and nine points for sophomore Jim McDonald and 4 goals and 4 assists for junior Kevin Keomanee-Dizon. The Lion's play their own Senior Night game today at 3:50 pm at the Skating Edge Ice Arena. Come check out the action as the Lion's take on ASU Sundevils, or watch the game live HERE.

Lion's Hold off Comeback, Get Sweep...
The Lion's held off another USC comeback and earned their first ever sweep of the Trojans. USC scored first, but senior Nick Cruz answered right back on a long rebound goal. LMU wouldn't trail again in the game with sophomores Brian McNulty and Steve Vollkommer each netting two more goals. USC would answer back each time, including the tying goal with one second remaining in the game. That goal brought back memories of another USC comeback in Anaheim in 2008, though this time LMU was able to get the victory in overtime. Kevin Keomanee-Dizon chipped the puck out of the zone and Freshman Hunter Costin battled two Trojans as he worked his way to the USC net. With only one hand on his stick, Costin was able to tap the puck between the legs of the Trojan netminde with a minute remaining in OT to secure the sweep. LMU will play CSUF and ASU next week in the final two games of the season. See you next Saturday at 3:40 pm as the Lion's celebrate seniors Nick Cruz and Collin O'Malley in their final game as a Lion.
1/30/11
LMU Win Waved Off...
The Lion's, coming off an upset victory the night before, came out strong against ASU in their third game of the weekend. Taking the lead early in the first, the Lion's never trailed in the game. ASU would never go down by more than one and eventually tied the game at 4-4 late in the third period. LMU would keep the pressure on, and thought they had scored their fifth goal with under a minute left, only to have it waved off. The game would head to OT, where a back and forth 5 minute OT would end in heartbreak with ASU scoring with under a minute left. Though LMU thought they should have won the game, a strong weekend showing sets the stage for their final three games of the year. Sophomores Brian McNulty and Jim McDonald took control this weekend, being involved in a majority of the weekend's LMU scoring.
1/29/11
Lion's Stun in NAU Senior Night...
The Lion's rebounded after a 6-0 shutout on Friday and stunned a sold out crowd at NAU's Senior night with a 6-3 victory. The Lion's, who were already shorthanded on the trip, were also without the services of the suspended captain Bobby Arnold, but played a smart defensive game and found their offensive breaking out for six goals. Scoring the first two goals of the game, the Lion's traded goals the rest of the way, keeping the NAU crowd quiet and finishing the series with the win. The Lion's will hope to take this momentum with them tomorrow and get another victory at ASU. You can watch the game live at 2:20 pst HERE!
1/23/11
Lion's Drop Important WCHC Set...
The Lion's lost two important games this weekend, both WCHC contests. CSULB played at LMU on Thursday night, and the Lion's jumped out to an early lead on a Kevin Keomanee-Dizon goal. CSULB scored three straight goals, and never trailed again winning the game 7-4. On Saturday LMU traveled to Fullerton, and got down 2-0 at the end of the second. They battled back to tie the game at two with 4 minutes to go. Two quick penalties gave CSUF a 5-3 advantage which they scored on to take a 3-2 lead, and eventually scored an empty netter to win 4-2. Though LMU lost both games, they controlled the pace for most of the weekend, outshooting the opponent in both games. LMU will try to regroup as they travel to Arizona for three games this coming weekend.
1/16/11
Points on the Board...
The Lion's burst out for 10 goals in a victory over University of Texas on Sunday afternoon. The defense came up big in the second half of the game with 8 points, including four slapshot goals. Junior Dylan Milo had a five point night and led the Lions in scoring. Though the Lions had plenty of offense, they became sloppy at times letting Texas stay in the game. LMU will need a complete all around game this coming Thursday as they look for their first victory of the year over their most heated rival, CSULB. It's a home game and the puck drops at 9:40 PM, see you at the rink. Go Lions!
1/13/11
UCLA Game Cancelled, Texas Up Next...
Friday's away game at UCLA has been cancelled, meaning next up for the Lions is University of Texas. This will be a home game with a noon faceoff at the Skating Edge Arena. This is the first meeting ever for the two teams, and the Lion's will catch Texas on the end of a 4 game trip. It is also youth hockey day for the Lions, with youth players getting free admission, the ability to participate in games inbetween periods and getting a post game locker room tour. See you this Sunday and go Lions!
1/4/11
New Year, New Semester, Same Goal...
After a long holiday break that was hopefully as good for you as it was for the LMU team, the Lion's are soon back to the ice to start a very important second semester. With 11 games over the next 7 weeks, the Lion's need to have a great performance in order to reach their season goal of reaching the regional tournament. The semester starts off playing at UCLA on January 14th, followed by the first home game of the semester, an afternoon face off vs. University of Texas.
Check back often for updates on some exciting things in work for this coming semester. Go Lions...
12/4/10
Comeback Falls Short in Semester Finale...
The Lions certainly had their hands full in the final game of the first semester, traveling to CSULB to take on the 7th ranked 49er's. The Lions, who have been off since their 5-2 win over UCLA two weeks ago, started sluggishly, going down 1-0 in the opening minutes. They were able to come back and tie the game 1-1 in the first. The Lions would again find themselves down a goal, only to tie the game at 2-2 heading into the final period. A carry over powerplay didn't convert and the 49er's scored just after getting back to even strength to take a 3-2 lead. They'd score again to increase their lead to 4-2 with 7 minutes to go in the game. Freshman Hunter Costin would add another goal to his season total with only a few minutes remaining and the Lions would have chance after chance to tie the game late. Unable to score, the 49er's converted a fifth and final time with the net empty and finished the Lion's first semester with a 5-3 loss. The Lions had solid performances from multiple rookies, including freshman goalie Vitto Banez who started his second game in a row. Other rookies who added points were Robert Yanotta and Brian McNulty. The Lions will be off for finals and winter break and are back with two games the weekend of January 14th. See you then!
11/21/10
Three Point Weekend for the Lions...
LMU had a tough weekend series, traveling to SDSU and UCLA. On Friday, the Lions traveled to SDSU to face a team they've never beaten. Even with early penalty trouble, the Lions had the game tied up late in the second. Down a goal in the third, a 5 minute power play led the Lions to a 3-2 lead. Unfortunately, SDSU was able to find the equalizer and the game would go into OT. The fourth period was back and forth, until a strange bouncing puck slipped through the pads of LMU's Collin O'Malley and gave SDSU a 4-3 OT victory. The following night the Lions traveled to UCLA and dominated play throughout the game even while missing a handful of key players. Freshman goalie Vittorio Banez got his first start as a Lion and made key saves throughout the game to earn his first victory with a final score of 5-2. The Lions are off over Thanksgiving, and back for the final game of the first semester against their most heated rival, CSULB.
11/11/10
Lions Find "Century Cup" Gold...
The Lions won a hard fought game against USC 2-0, winning the first annual "Century Cup" between the Lions and Trojans. The Lions won the cup in the first two of a best of three series. Both goalies played well, with senior Collin O'Malley getting his first shutout of the season. The star for the Trojans was freshman goalie Alex Caravaggio, who saw lots of LMU shots but prevented secondary scoring chances, and kept the Trojans in the game. The two scorers for LMU were sophomore Brian McNulty and freshman Trevor Isbell, as the two new faces continue to put up points for the Lions. LMU Is back on the ice tonight to face another LA foe, CSULB in the first of the season series.

11/7/10
Blazing Start Doesn't Last in SDSU Loss...
The Lions came flying out of the game on Saturday night vs. SDSU, the first of two meetings between the two clubs this season. On a puck held in the offensive zone by Brady Lernihan, he passed to Senior Nick Cruz who's shot left a rebound and Freshman Cody Wolterman would bury it only 2 minutes into the game. The Lions would add another later in the period on a power play to take a 2-0 lead, but SDSU would score 6 straight goals over the next 2 periods and beat the Lions 6-3. The Lions have two important games this coming week, vs. USC and CSULB.
10/29/10
Slow Streak Continues...
The Lions continued their tepid play of late as they were blown out by NAU last night. NAU scored 4 power play goals and were up 6-0 before LMU got on the board. One of the bright spots was freshman goalie Vitto Banez who took over for O'Malley in the second period and slowed the NAU attack for the rest of the game. With October finishing on the wrong note, hopefully November will bring better games for the Lions, who start out next weekend vs. SDSU on Saturday night at 10 PM. See you at the rink.
10/23/10
Fullerton Beats No Show Lions...
Not the best way to start their WCHC schedule, LMU didn't have a good offensive opportunity until the third period and CSUF hung on after a strong third for their 4-3 victory. Down 2-0 until the third, LMU finally got a jump to their step and tied the game up twice in the third, only to have Fullerton score soon after. Tyler Payne took the loss, though he came up with a few clutch saves late in the game. LMU needs to regroup and prove their ability as another WCHC team comes to town next Thursday, October 28 vs. NAU.
10/22/10
LMU Beats USC in First of "Century Cup"...
LMU held onto a comfortable 4-0 lead late in the second period of this first game of the best of three "Century Cup" vs. USC. The Lion's found themselves playing undisciplined in the third period, taking numerous penalties but held on for a 5-2 victory. Sophomore Jim McDonald had a very solid game for the Lions, controlling the puck on offense and having multiple chances when driving wide. Senior goalie Collin O'Malley came up big multiple times, including a penalty shot stop with under a second left in the first. While the Lion's dominated play, their lack of poise let USC back into the game. The penalty kill played very well, keeping USC scoreless on their power play. Junior Dylan Milo scored 2 as the Lions will look to win the "Century Cup" when USC visits LMU on November 11. Tomorrow LMU takes on an up and coming Fullerton team that beat USC 5-1 early in the year, this is LMU's first WCHC game of the season. The Lion's will use this game as their "Breast Cancer Awareness" night and ask that all fans wear pink to the game. Catch the game tomorrow at home vs. CSUF at 10 PM, or if you can't make it out to the game, watch it live HERE.

Lions Squeak Past Stanford...
After two draining games vs. SJSU, LMU found themselves facing off against Stanford on Sunday afternoon, the final game of the trip. LMU never found their flow in the game, having to come from behind twice. LMU scored late in the third period to tie the game at 3-3. After a back and forth OT, the Lions went to their first shootout of the season. Senior goalie Collin O'Malley stood strong for the Lions, stopping 4-5 Stanford shots. LMU won the shootout 2-1, with goals by freshman Hunter Costin and Senior Nick Cruz to seal the victory. The Lions will get ready for next weeks games against USC on Friday and CSUF on Saturday. Friday's game vs. USC is the first of the new "Centennial Cup" vs. USC and Saturday vs. CSUF marks the first game of the WCHC schedule for the Lions.
See you at the rink!

Down to the Wire vs. SJSU...
LMU came as close as possible to beating SJSU tonight, falling 3-2 in a game where the Lions pressured until the last seconds. LMU got on the board first, with sophomore Brian McNulty escaping on a breakaway and finding the top corner. SJSU was able to answer back soon after and the game was tied until SJSU was able to take a 2-1 lead with a powerplay goal with only 3 seconds left in the second. Even with this deflating late period goal, the Lions came out flying in the third period. SJSU was able to hold off the Lion attack and scored with 5 minutes to go in the third on another powerplay. LMU answered on the next shift with junior captain Bobby Arnold bringing the Lion's back within 1 at 3-2. LMU went on to get a powerplay and scored, only to have the goal called back because the ref was out of position. LMU got a final powerplay
with over a minute left. With O'Malley pulled the Lions got a few shots on net, but were unable to tie the game, and lost all three games to SJSU. Though it is a loss, the Lion's proved they now belong in the conversation as they had three very competitive games against an SJSU team that made it to nationals last season. LMU faces off against Stanford tomorrow at 12:30 PM to finish the roadtrip. To watch that game live, or rewatch this great game vs. SJSU, click HERE!

Slow Start Dooms Lions...
The Lions were hoping to improve on their last game against SJSU, a very close 4-2 loss, in their game tonight, the first of two on the weekend. A slow start doomed the Lions though, down 3-0 after two periods, LMU couldn't get any momentum going. SJSU eventually led 5-0, with two odd man rushes early in the third. LMU would finally get on the board, with sustained pressure in the second half of the third and eventually drop the game 5-2. Though LMU had good chanches throughout the game, the quick strike SJSU offense coupled with solid goaltending helped SJSU cruise to a victory in this game. LMU has their final shot against SJSU this season, tomorrow night at 7 PM. Catch the game live HERE!
10/15/10
On The Road Again...
For the second time in a month the Lions will head out on a long road trip, this time to San Jose to get some revenge for a game LMU could have won last week at home. The Lions will face off against SJSU Friday and Saturday nights in San Jose, and finish the trip at Stanford on Sunday at noon. Follow all the action on Twitter or watch all the games live HERE.

SJSU Bounces Past the Lions...
Normally SJSU would bring a silence to the LMU team, having beaten the Lions easily in all their previous
contests. But with a new and improved team this season, LMU was ready for the Spartans this time around. LMU jumped out to an early lead with Kevin Keomanee-Dizon cutting across the middle and putting a wrister into the far corner. SJSU was able to answer late in the period with a stuff in attempt that snuck past O'Malley. The second was scoreless until the 3 minute mark when SJSU scored again on a slow bouncing puck from the point. LMU couldn't convert on a 5-3 at the start of the third and SJSU scored again to make it 3-1 on a rush that deflected off a backchecking Lion's forward. Freshman Hunter Costin answered right back with another hard slap shot that found the net to make it 3-2. LMU had the momentum again, but another long shot goal snuck past O'Malley and the Lion's fell 4-2 to SJSU. While LMU thinks they could have won the game, the good news is they get two more shots next weekend to beat the Spartans. Watch the games next weekend live HERE!

Lions Blow Up Home Opener...
The word was out and the stands were packed as LMU took to their home ice for the first time this season versus UCLA. In what has become somewhat of a tradition, LMU played UCLA for their home opener for the third year in a row, last year barely winning in a come from behind victory. That wasn't the story this time around as LMU dominated play throughout the game, winning 8-1. UCLA's goalie stood strong, keeping the Lions to only one goal in the first, but LMU broke out in the second taking a 4-0 lead much to the delight of the packed stands. Senior Goalie Collin O'Malley played a strong game, and came within 2 minutes of his first shutout of the year. PJ Gilmore stood out with 2 goals and multiple assists and the LMU powerplay again led the charge, scoring 2 goals. LMU's fans didn't make it easy on UCLA with chants ringing throughout the arena during the game, mostly directed towards the UCLA goalie. LMU heads back to the ice on Friday to face a very tough SJSU in what should be a very good test for the Lions. See you at the rink, Friday, 10/8 at 10 PM or watch it live HERE! Go Lions.
10/3/10
Going Home a Winner...
The Lions came out slow today on the final game of their trip to Washington, but after a little "motivation" from Coach Dunn, they turned on the jets and beat Gonzaga 14-3. The scoring was spread throughout the lineup, including freshman Brady Lernihan and Cody Wolterman each scoring their first goals at LMU. Junior Nick Soresi also had a solid outting netting the first hat trick of the season for LMU. Although the Lions wish they could have finished off the trip 3-0, the loss to a good Idaho team will motivate the Lions as they face a tough and exciting week. On Wednesday, October 6, LMU plays their home opener vs. UCLA, puck drops at 9:40 PM. Then on Friday the always tough SJSU comes to town, in the first of three consecutive games for the two teams. Hope to see you at the rink next week, or if you can't make it, catch the live stream HERE!

Lions Fall Just Short...
The Lions faced their first real test of the season, taking on University of Idaho tonight at the Eastern Washington University Rec Center. The Lions came out strong and controlled play through a scoreless first. Idaho's goalie played well all night keeping many Lions opportunities off the board. The second period proved to be costly for the Lions, who let Idaho take control of the game, and ended up giving up 4 goals in the period. Kevin Keomanee-Dizon and Hunter Costin scored during the period, to leave the Lions down 4-2 after two. The Lions came out and took control again in the third, with Keomanee-Dizon and Costin each scoring a second goal, bringing the Lions within 1 goal with three minutes left, 5-4. The Lions continued to press, outshooting Idaho 21 to 8 in the third, but couldn't get the tying goal to fall. Idaho added an insurance empty net goal with seconds remaining and the Lions fell to Idaho 6-4 in a very exciting game. Although it hurts to lose after outshooting Idaho, the Lions are hoping to secure another win over Gonzaga tomorrow and prepare for a big week ahead. You can rewatch tonights game, or tomorrow's Gonzaga rematch HERE! Go Lions!

Rookies Lead in Dominating Win...
The Lions won in decisive fashion in their first game of the season, taking a 12-2 decision over Gonzaga. Led by the rookies, LMU took off early, leading 7-0 after the first. Scoring was spread throughout with rookies Hunter Costin, Rob Yanotta and Trevor Isbell each scoring two goals. Other Lions who scored include Jim McDonald, Travis Amick, Nick Soresi, PJ Gilmore and Kyle Watson. The Lions have a tough game tomorrow against University of Idaho at 7:30 PM. Captains Selected...
With the graduation of LMU's last captain, Chris Miller, a spot was open to elect the third captain in LMU's history. This year's captain is junior Bobby Arnold, who was an assistant captain last year. Joining him wearing letters this season are assistant captain and senior Nick Cruz, who has been an assistant the past three seasons. The other assistant captain is sophomore Jim McDonald, this is his first year wearing a letter. LMU scrimmages College of the Canyon's this week in preperation for their first games of the season on October 1 in Spokane, Washington.

Lions Lose Sophomore Indigaro to Injury...

Promising Sophomore Michael Indigaro sustained a wrist injury at an LMU team practice this week, and it will require surgery. During a 1-1 battling drill, Indigaro fell to the ice and had his wrist stepped on, causing muscle damage. The injury will keep him out of the line-up for 3-5 months, slating a return date for the second semester of the season. Indigaro, who had 9 points last season, came back this season looking stronger than ever and was looking ready to have a breakout season. This is a major blow to the Lion's lineup as they prepare for their first games next week. We wish Mike best of luck as he heals.
9/8/10
Welcome to "Hell Week"...
6 AM, 10 PM, no problem... As "Hell Week" comes, so does the beginning of the LMU Hockey season. This week sees morning conditioning practices, and tonight was the first on ice practice. Although the players were worn out from the conditioning, the practice was still very up tempo with all the players on the ice for the first time together. Also for the first time, the players were able to move into the locker room, each player setting up their own stall. Pictures of the completed Locker Room are available HERE. With only three weeks until the first game, the Lions are striving to make this the season they take a big step in the ACHA rankings.
8/30/10
And They Meet Again...
The Lion's finally got together, meeting in the team's new locker room for the beginning of year team meeting. All the new players got to meet the returners, everyone met the coaching staff and got to check out the locker room. Following the meeting, the team had a intersquad scrimmage, showcasing the newest players to the team. In what turned out to be a fast paced competitive scrimmage, the Lion's look to have their best team since restarting in 2006. With the first games a month away, the Lion's have plenty of work ahead. Go Lions.
7/30/10
One Added to Coaching Staff...
The Lion's are happy to announce the addition of one coach to the coaching staff for the upcoming season. Former standout player, Ryan Rosales, will return to the Lions as an assistant coach, focusing on defense. Tim Chiappetta will remain with the organization, but will be taking on the new role of "Scouting Director" for this season. With everything else remaining the same, the Lions are looking forward to a successful season.
4/29/10
LMU Joins New Conference...
The Lion's are proud to announce the creation of the new West Coast Hockey Conference, which will consist of six teams in its inaugural season. The WCHC is meant to provide ACHA D2 west coast teams with a conference to play in during the ACHA season. The six inaugural teams are LMU, CSULB, CSUF, SDSU, ASU and NAU. The conference calls for each team to play each other twice, meaning there will be 10 conference games for the Lions this year. Usually there will be a end of season tournament for the WCHC, but this year a regular season champion will be crowned. The conference is settling on final details, but should be moving forward very soon.
5/19/10

End of Season Awards...
The Lion's hosted their yearly banquet this past Friday to celebrate the season, graduating seniors and yearly award winners. The two parting seniors, Chris Miller and Jeremy Birenbaum, were celebrated and given graduating gifts. Also celebrated was club advisor Al Tipon for his many years of service and he received a customized team letterman jacket. Finally the team got to give out the awards and this year the winner for the Most Improved Player was sophomore goalie Tyler Payne, who worked hard throughout the year and ended up posting the single season wins record for a goalie. Sophomore Bobby Arnold was given the Coaches Award for his constant hard work and leadership this season. Sophomore Kevin Keomanee-Dizon was voted team MVP as he led the Lion's in points, breaking the previous yearly records. Finally Grad student and club founder, Chris Miller, won the award created in his name, the "Old Man Miller" award for the player most dedicated to the success of the LMU Hockey Program.
2/26/10
All In the Numbers...
The Lion players and team have set a number of team records this season, both offensively, defensively and in the penalty box. Sophomore Kevin Keomanee-Dizon set offensive point marks in all three catagories; goals, assists and total points. Kevin's 23 goals, 23 assists and 46 total points are all records, beating the previous goal record of Nick Cruz (22), Assist record of Jimmy Kelly (18) and total point record, Nick Cruz (35). Sophomore Tyler Payne also set the single season wins record this year with 6 wins, previously set at five wins for Chris Marks. Although single season records were set for specific totals, as a team the scoring was up across the board. This season the team scored a total of 298 points, besting the previous record of 254. On the bad side of the numbers though was a severe uptick in penalties. The previous record was 390 team penalty minutes, and a single player record of 72 minutes for Phil Higgins in 2007/08. This season the Lions received a whopping 609 penalty minutes, with sophomore Bobby Arnold leading the way with 91 minutes. The Lions can use this data next season to improve the most important number, the number of wins, which slipped by one this season.

Lions Make History...
In a drastic reversal of fortune from the previous night, the Lions came out and played one of their stronger games of the season in the home finale. The previous night, LMU hung tough at CSULB's home final, keeping the game within 2 thoughout the end of the second period. However, early in the third, LMU's Dylan Milo received a 5 minute major penalty and CSULB capitalized scoring 4 goals on the power play. The game got out of hand, with 2 players from each team receiving DQ's, including LMU's Chris Mallaber and James Melaugh, both for fighting.
The next night was a different story, as LMU came flying out of the gate. It was senior night, Captain Chris Miller and Jeremy Birenbaum's last game as Lion's. LMU had never won a senior game before this night, losing twice to UCLA and once to Pepperdine. The team was determined to go out a winner, and led throughout, eventually winning 6-4. The scoring was spread out throughout the Lion's lineup, with Kevin Keomanee-Dizon leading the way with 2 goals. Other scorers for the Lions were Jim McDonald, Travis Amick, Nick Cruz and Dylan Milo. Tyler Payne had his best game of the season, stopping 43 of 47 shots. Thanks to all the fans who came out to the final game of the year, and to our Seniors Chris Miller, Jeremy Birenbaum and our great helpers Carmela Birenbaum and Adele Tipon. Please continue to check back during the summer for updates on the Lion's next season. Enjoy the off season, and go Lions!!

Let the Games Begin...
The Lions just concluded their final practice of the season, and will enter the final weekend of the season with two tough games against CSU Long Beach. Having split the first two games with Long Beach this season, LMU hopes to bring some of the offensive firepower that has developed this semester, and get their record back to the .500 mark. LMU plays at CSULB on Friday at 9:15 PM in Lakewood, CA. The following night the Lions will play their final ACHA game of the year, at home, vs. CSULB. That game will be held at Culver Ice Rink, the puck drops at 5:15 PM on Saturday night. Hope to see everyone at the rink.

2/6/10
Lions Gamble in Vegas...
The Lions went on their final trip of the season, and ended up in one of the players favorite spots... Las Vegas. Besides all the fun, the Eighth ranked UNLV Rebels awaited the Lions for two games. Before this series, LMU was 1-3 against the Rebels, and hoped to come back and surprise the ranked Rebels once again. While they Lions ended up losing both games, they gave UNLV a tough game both nights, keeping the score within 2 late into the third in each game. In the second game of the series, the Lions, down big heading into the third, mounted a huge rally, scoring five goals in the period. Sophomore Kevin Keomanee shined for the Lions, scoring 4 goals on the weekend. Grad student Chris Miller also had big contributions, with 2 goals and 2 assists. Some other scorers were Travis Amick, David Morris and Dylan Milo. The Lions look to keep the momentum from this weekend vs. #8 UNLV, and take it into the final weekend of the season. LMU will play Long Beach twice this coming weekend, including the LMU Home Finale on February 13th, at Culver City Ice Rink. The game starts at 5 PM. See you at the rink!!
1/30/10
Lions Sweep Bruins ...
The Lions looked to bounce back on Friday night after a hard loss to west ranked NAU on Thursday. NAU controlled play for most of the game and won handily 11-4. With that loss fresh in the minds of the Lions, they looked to come out hard and complete the season sweep of UCLA. The Bruins would start off the scoring though, as they put two goals up in the first, to lead 2-0 going into the second. This was the Lions period, scored 4 goals in the second, leading 4-3 after two. The third would be back and forth, with UCLA keeping the game within one. On a 6-4 advantage late in the game, UCLA scored to make it 6-5, and had another 6-4 chance to tie it with a minute to go, but LMU hung tough for the victory. Nick Cruz had two goals for the Lions, and freshman Mike Indigaro scored the winner on a nice pass from junior James Melaugh. Chris Mallaber and Bobby Arnold netted the other goals for the Lions, who won a hard hitting affair. Tyler Payne played well for the victory, his second of this semester. Next weekend the Lions travel to Las Vegas to face a very tough UNLV in a weekend series.
1/24/10
Big Week for Lions...
The Lions will play two important games this week, both at home. On Thursday night, the Lions will host NAU. LMU has lost both games to NAU so far this season, but those both came on a shorthanded roadtrip to Arizona back in October. Both games were closely played, so the Lions are hoping for some help at home. On Friday, LMU will now host UCLA. This is a change from the original schedule which had UCLA hosting LMU. The Lions will hope to sweep the Bruins this season, as they face off on Friday at 10:30 PM. Hope to see you at the rink for these two important games.

Lions Win in a Wild Game...
In a game that would have made former LMU basketball head coach Paul Westhead proud, the Lions prevailed over USC 9-7 at USC in Anaheim, CA. Westhead's "Run-n-Gun" offense obviously wasn't a problem in this game, as 3 Lions scored multiple goals, including Nick Soresi with a hat trick. The Lions came roaring out of the gate, scoring the first three goals of the game, and getting up to a 7-2 lead late in the second. USC wouldn't quit and scored 5 unanswered goals to tie the game at 7 late in the third. Back on their heels, the Lions rallied and Nick Soresi scored the game winner with 3 minutes remaining. In his first game this season with the Lions, Travis Amick netted an insurance goal, assisted by captain Chris Miller, to cap off the game, 9-7. In an unusual offensive outburst, the Lions were aided by a handful of new skaters this semester, including the return of last years leading scorer Nick Cruz, along with Travis Amick and new comer Joe Cure. Tyler Payne secured his fourth win of the year with timely saves. The Lions hope to extend this momentum into 2 wins next weekend vs. NAU and UCLA.
1/21/10
Back on the Ice ...
The Lions see their first game action of this second semester vs. local rival USC. Earlier in the season saw USC take a shootout victory in an uninspiring LMU performance. The Lions hope to reverse fortune this time around, with an improved offensive lineup for this semester, including the return of Nick Cruz and Travis Amick. Make sure to follow the action on Twitter, or you can listen to USC webcast here. Go Lions.
1/8/10
Schedule Change ...
The Lions have announced a schedule change for the upcoming second semester. On the final weekend of the regular season, the Lions have moved their home finale to Saturday, February 13, 2010. The game will still take place at Culver Ice Arena, with the puck drop still at 5:15 PM. The Lions only have two home games remaining this season, hope to see you all at the rink!
12/5/09
Lions Drop Weekend to Ranked SDSU...
The Lions, coming back from a Thanksgiving week off, finished off the first semester by taking on ranked San Diego State University in a home and home series this weekend. Friday saw the Lions travel down to San Diego, and despite many great chances, couldn't put up good numbers. On the other side, LMU lapses resulted in many goals for SDSU. Saturday was a tight game for both teams, as LMU was within one for a majority of the game. A few quick goals late in the third led SDSU to a weekend sweep over the Lions. LMU is off until January, where the Lions will play a number of important games. The team will also be welcoming back a handful of players that were missing for the first semester. Have a happy holiday, see you in January.
11/21/09
Lions Fight Back for Victory...
The Lions came ready to play this evening against CSU Fullerton. In their only meeting prior, LMU came away with an 8-4 victory. LMU started the scoring off early, as Nick Soresi sent a backhander from the slot over the goalies pad for a 1-0 lead. Fullerton would answer right away, and the period would stay tied at 1 until the end. In the second the Lions would again take a lead on a goal from Chris Mallaber, but once again Fullerton would score right away to tie it at 2. Halfway through the second, Fullerton put up two quick goals, both long screened shots. Down 2, LMU rallied scoring 2 goals in 21 seconds to tie the game. The first, a shorthanded rebound goal by Kevin Keomanee, followed by a nice goal by Jim McDonald on a pass from Mike Indigaro. Tied at two, the Lions scored again late in the second, Chris Mallaber, to take a 5-4 lead into the break. LMU would score early in the third, Keomanee on the power play from Arnold to take a 6-4 lead. Fullerton hung tight, and finally brought it within one with under 3 to play. LMU rallied right back with Keomanee's third tally of the night, and Mallber finished it off with his hattrick into the empty net. Turnovers plauged the Lions throughout the game, as Collin O'Malley came up big in the third to seal the victory. LMU has the coming week off for the holidays, and comes back to face a ranked SDSU team twice heading into the semester break. Have a happy holiday, and see you in December.
11/19/09
Rough Night for Lions...
The Lions, who seem to be consistantly inconsistant, lived up to that again as they took a hard loss to #12 ASU. In the first meeting of these two teams, LMU took a 7-5 loss, but only with 9 skaters. The first period had everyone believing an exciting game was happening with LMU down 2-1 after one. Those feelings weren't around after the 2nd as ASU put goal after goal up against the Lions who couldn't seem to stop an ASU rush. Unlike the Lions who had many great chances, but the puck would never be finished. This includes breakaways and many open net rebounds that were sent wide. The game broke down into a penalty fest including fights as the time wound down. LMU looks to rebound this weekend as they take on local CSU Fullerton. LMU has the victory in the only previous meeting this season.
11/13/09
What a Difference a Day Makes...
The Lions looked like a completely different team as they faced off against Cal State Long Beach on Friday night. The Lions played a complete game and showed how well they can play as a squad. Long Beach scored the only tally in the first period, on a quick rebound. In the second the Lions stepped up the physical play, with Sophomore Bobby Arnold making 3 huge open ice hits. On a single play CSULB took two penalties, and LMU capitalized only 6 seconds in on a point shot from James Melaugh. Tied at one going into the third, the Lions looked to take control of the game. With neither team backing down, the game went back and forth. Finally, on another power play opportunity, Freshman David Morris sent a fluttering puck towards the net from a James McDonald pass. The shot confused the Beach goalie, and went in to take the 2-1 lead. LMU started playing dump and chase hockey, abandoming the up tempo style that garnered them 43 shots during the contest. Long Beach continued to pressure, but strong defensive plays along the boards and a few key stops by Junior keeper Collin O'Malley helped the Lions hang on for the victory in what was one of the most exciting games in LMU history. LMU next faces off against ASU on Thursday November 19, at Culver Ice Rink. Puck drops at 5:15 PM.
11/12/09
Turnovers Cost Lions in Exciting Game...
The Lions had every reason to come out flying vs. a USC team that always seems to have their number. However, they didn't. Costly turnovers hampered the Lions all night, directly leading to 2 USC goals and many chances that were eventually turned away. USC led 2-0 early, and the Lions luckily tied it before the first break. In the second, the Lions started moving their legs and played their only solid period of the night, taking a 4-2 lead into the third. However, LMU came out not to lose in the third, playing back and letting the Trojans get many chances, compared to few for the Lions. USC would tie the game with under 2 minutes remaining. An exciting back and forth OT brought nothing and USC won the shootout 2-1. This is a heartbreaking loss for the Lions who should have won this game. Luckily they get to play again tomorrow night against another local rival and tough team, CSULB. Follow the game on Twitter, 10:10 PM start at Bay Harbor. Thanks to all the new fans that came out tonight and we hope to see you again soon.

Up and Down Weekend...
The Lions finished off the season series vs. CSU Fresno this weekend in an up and down effort. While the Lions dominated play on Friday, Fresno's goalie wouldn't give in and a few weak goals against LMU resulted in a surprising loss. Saturday the Lions came back to play, leading the game early and easily taking a 5-1 victory. The Lions went 2-1 on the weekend, bringing them back to the .500 mark. This week sees LMU play two big home games vs. rival USC and rival CSULB. In other news, the Lions received votes again in the regional ranking period, but did not crack the top 15. LMU has a strong schedule this month and hopes to crack into the rankings next time. See you at the rink to cheer on the Lions as they play two important games this week. Go Lions

Lions Spread the Wealth in Victory...
The Lions took to the ice to play the University of Washington in the second meeting ever between the schools. UW walked away with the victory in the first meeting 5-3, but they would have no such luck on this night. The Lions came out of the gate flying, however the UW goalie kept the door closed in the first. UW scored a PP goal to take the lead into the 2nd frame. LMU didn't change anything it was doing, as the Lions kept plugging away at the UW net. The floodgates opened in the second as the Lions poured on 6 unanswered 2nd period goals. In the third, the teams traded scores, with LMU winning the game 9-4. The remarkable story is that 7 seperate players scored on the night for LMU. And the future looks bright for LMU as 6 of the 7 scorers were freshman and sophomores. LMU hopes to keep the winning streak alive as they travel to Fresno in the morning for 2 away games. Follow the team on Twitter, or listen to Fresno's webcast HERE.

Back on Track...
The Lions knew this was an important weekend, after winning their home opening game, they have hit a bit of a rough patch. LMU came out strong and never trailed CSU Fullerton, eventually winning the game 8-4. LMU Sophomore Nick Soresi netted a hat trick and Collin O'Malley shut the door on a vastly improved CSU Fullerton squad. It was a good win for the Lions and they now look forward to facing Fresno tonight.

Lions Looking Forward...
Unfortunately, the roadtrip went as expected. The Lions, travelling with only two lines due to injury and midterms, couldn't keep up with NAU and ASU this weekend. In what should have been three good games with a full squad, the Lions couldn't hang with NAU in both games. An impressive performance on Sunday though gave hope to the Lions, as they were in the ASU game, only losing by two tallies, 7-5. Now that the trip is over, the Lions are looking to regroup and get back in the win column with two home games this weekend.

Shorthanded Roadtrip Looms...
The Lions got on the bus at Midnight on Friday morning, headed for Arizona for their second road trip of the season. This arguably is the teams toughest road trip of the season, as they face top 10 teams NAU, twice, and ASU. The Lions will have to battle hard as a number of medical injuries and midterms have left the Lions with a short bench for this trip. Not making the trip is the Lions entire top line, due to injury, and a number of other key players. The Lions will continue to battle and hope to come home with some big upset victories from this weekend. Go Lions!!

Lions Struggles Continue...
The Lions took to the ice for what was shaping up to be a great game. Taking on a CSULB team that has become an LMU rival for Long Beach's home opener. LB started it off with 2 goals. The Lions answered, but LB took another 2 goal lead into the 2nd intermission. Even with an early third period goal, the Lions were unable to come back, losing 5-3. Junior goalie Collin O'Malley kept the Lions alive after they took 17 penalties during the contest, spending nearly 30 minutes short handed. Although a better showing than the previous weekend, the Lions need to regroup before their tough Arizona Roadtrip next weekend.

Lions Storm Back for Victory in Third...
The Lions took to the ice for their home opener as they sponsored their game with Dr. Susan Love's "Army of Women" Breast Cancer research. The Lion's however did not come out strong and trailed 2-0 after 1st and 4-2 after two. Going into the third period the Lions came out strong, looking to win their home opener. Kevin Keomanee scored 16 seconds into the third period. However, UCLA was not done, putting up the next three goals to make it 7-3. This goal streak chased Junior Collin O'Malley from the net, and saw Senior David Ishida strap in for the end. The Lions, looking down, turned to Sophomore Nick Soresi to pick them back up. Soresi scored two goals in 4 minutes to bring the Lions within 2. UCLA began to take penalties and the Lions capitalized twice on a 5-3 to tie the game. With the game tied, on the next faceoff the Lions took the puck straight up ice as David Morris tapped home a Chris Mallaber pass, the arena erupted. The Lions held down their defensive zone and hung on for the improbable victory. LMU takes on CSUN on the road tomorrow. Go Lions!!

Lions Hang, but Fall...
The Lions stepped onto the ice ready to go vs. the highly ranked SJSU hockey team. After losing both games last season, LMU was ready to make a name for themselves. LMU took to the ice a different team than the night before, taking an early 1-0 lead. SJSU was able to tie the game late in the first and the game stayed tied 1-1 part way through the second. As the game went on, SJSU started to capitalize on LMU mistakes. At the end of the 2nd SJSU was up 4-1, scoring 2 goals in the final minutes of the penalty filled game. LMU came out in the third skating hard again, as they tried to crawl back into the game. The Lions got within 3, but SJSU continued to capitalize on a dwindling LMU squad, eventually pouring it on, tallying multiple power play goals the final 5 minutes of the game. Although the score doesn't show the improvement, the LMU squad is excited to continue the season and prove they belong, moving up in the regional rankings as the season continues. Coaching Change ...
The Lions would like to thank coach Frank Salcido for a successful season. Leading the team to it's best record, the team reached a milestone when it finished over .500 for the first time in it's 3-year history. Frank has decided to move to Nevada to enjoy his retirement with his wife and try to attend more games of his son, Brian. Frank, also a long time AAA coach for the LA Jr Kings, brought his experiences to the LMU program and the players responded. "We were fortunate to have a high level coach like Frank lead our squad. This is just an example of our commitment to build the club to be a national contender," says Al Tipon, the clubs advisor. "We wish Frank and his wife all the comforts of retirement and best of luck to Brian."
We are very happy to announce the Lions have hired Coach Alec Benson-Dunn to keep the progress moving forward. Raised in Los Angeles, Coach Dunn brings a wealth of playing and coaching experience to help move the Lions towards their goals... Keep checking back for more updates throughout the summer.

Offseason Updates...
The Lions are busy preparing for another successful season but would like to take a minute to remember last season. The Lions finished with their best record since the club restarted in 2006 at 13-12. While the record continues to go up, so does the toughness of LMU's schedule. For the first time this season LMU beat USC and CSULB, while LMU went at least .500 with every LA team, another first for LMU. This is partly due to Senior Goalie Christopher Marks. Marks, a 3 year starter, continued his strong play and helped LMU continue to move up the ranks, for the first time getting votes for Regional rankings. Other Lion's leaving the team after this season are Senior Matt Keppel, a 2 year player, and Grad student Jimmy Kelly. Keppel was known for his play in the corner, always willing to battle for the puck down low. Kelly, finishing his program after his first season, will be missed and provided a quick scoring threat for the Lions.
LMU is busy planning its schedule and other program changes, but is excited to return a large and young roster. With another strong group of recruits expected next season, LMU is looking to make a big jump in the rankings next season. Check back soon for more updates, and go Lions...

LMU Narrowly Drops Senior Game...
The Lions took on UCLA for the second year in a row for their Senior game. This years seniors were goalie Chris Marks, Matt Keppel and Jimmy Kelly. LMU started off slow in front of one of their biggest crowds of the season with UCLA taking a 2-0 lead. Getting down as much as 4-1, LMU battled strong in the third, bouyed by their crowd with chants of L-M-U. Closing the score to 5-4 late in the third, and on the 5-3 powerplay, LMU had a goal disallowed becasue of a high stick. They pressured until the last seconds, but could not convert. Losing the game 5-4 is a disappointing ending to an otherwise great season. LMU still finished with the best record in the schools history. Now starts the planning for next season...

LMU Wins at the Buzzer...
The LMU Lions headed to Long Beach to play the second game of the year vs. CSULB. In LMU's home opener, Long Beach took advantage of a slow LMU start and won easily. This game wouldn't be so simple. Although CSULB scored first, LMU battled back. The game was tied 2-2 after the second period with goals from freshman Adam Goette and Kevin Keomanee. Having to kill off a 5 minute major to leading scorer Nick Cruz, the Lions hung tough and freshman Dylan Milo tipped the puck into the neutral zone and scored on a breakaway with just over a minute left in the game. Keomanee added an empty net goal to give the Lions the 4-2 victory. Collin O'Malley was strong in net for the win. The Lions have next week off before facing D3 CSU Fullerton.

Lions Sweep Stanford...
The Lions swept Stanford on the road this weekend, winning the games in exciting fashion. LMU won the first game on Friday 5-2, with a scoring outburst in the second period. Another slow start almost ended it for the Lions as they took on UCLA for the first time this season. Getting down 2-0 after the second period the Lions came out after the break fired up. Kyle Flynn scored on the first shift to cut the lead in half. UCLA answered right back putting LMU down 2 again. The Lions got a powerplay midway through the third, when Freshman Adam Goette blew a slapshot past the UCLA goalie to bring it within one score again. The same line scored again right off the next faceoff, driving down deep and freshman Alvin Scott pushed the puck through the scrum in front of the net to tie up the game. Taking a penalty late, the Lions had to kill it off at the end of regulation and into overtime. Weekend Recap: Lions 2-1...
The Lions got off to the best start in their three ACHA seasons, going 2-1 against Gonzaga and Idaho. The Lions swept the season series vs. a scrappy Gonzaga team that kept the games close even with LMU dominating play for most of the games. The Lions faced a very fast and talented Idaho team on Sunday morning and didn't have the energy left to keep up. With too many defensive breakdowns and missed scoring opportunities the Lions made it easy for Idaho to walk away with a victory. Overall the weekend was a success for the Lions who next face CSULB in the home opener on October 10th. LMU thanks Gonzaga and Idaho for the great hospitality from this weekend.

Mid way through the first period Freshman Nick Cruz broke through the defense and scored on a long wrist shot short handed to lead the game off. In the second period the Lions took a penalty which Long Beach finally capitalized on to tie the game at one. However, late in the second LMU capitalized on a powerplay of their own, with Freshman Sam Thomas scoring on a rebound from a Nick Cruz point shot. It would remain 2-1 until the 12 minute mark in the third when another Long Beach power play goal would tie the game. LMU, skating with only 12 players because of injuries and school commitments, at last could not keep up, as Long Beach scored 3 more goals in the final seven minutes to win the game 5-2. LMU Senior goalie Chris Marks played an outstanding game turning aside 60 shots, making many spectacular saves. The Lions get their chance for revenge next week, February 7 at Bay Harbor Ice Rink, 9:30 PM.

Rust Shows Late, Lions drop first home game ...
The Lions returned to the ice facing sixth ranked BYU. The game started out well for the Lions who took the early lead on a goal by Senior Tyler Goeckner-Zoeller. Dave Maricondo worked the puck up high and took a low screened shot, and the rebound popped out of the mess onto Goeckner-Zoellers stick for his fifth of the year. BYU would answer back soon and the game would remain tied at one until late in the first when BYU started taking advantage of LMU's rusty team defense. BYU opened up a sizable lead going into the third. Two third period goals from freshman Nick Cruz could not spark the Lions as they ended up falling 9-3 to #6 BYU. This was the first home loss for the Lions this season. Up next, LMU takes on UCSD, January 18 at 10:45 PM.

LMU Hangs on to Beat UCLA ...
The Lions had a solid lead in the third but let it slip as UCLA came storming back. The game started off well for the Lions, as midway through the first Graduate student Tim Chiappetta scored a breakaway goal. UCLA would come back with 2 goals. LMU would counter late in the first to take the lead with another goal by Chiappetta and Senior Dave Maricondo. The score would remain 3-2 after the second, with LMU taking a 5-2 lead late into the third with goals from Freshman Sam Thomas and Senior Phil Higgins. LMU would get into penalty trouble in the final minutes, allowing UCLA to score two goals in the late stages, and making it an interesting finish. After an LMU timeout, they hung on for the win to sweep the Bruins this year, 3-0. LMU takes over the alltime series with UCLA 3-2. The Lions are off until January 18, and wish everyone a happy holiday season...
11/27/07

Lions Beat Rival Pepperdine...
The Lions looked strong as they took the ice against rival Pepperdine. LMU took the lead in the second with a solid performance from Freshman defenseman Sam Thomas. LMU controlled play throughout the game, putting up a lot of shots and great scoring opportunities vs. the strong Pepperdine goalie. Senior Dave Maricondo found the net for the Lion's second goal of the game late in the third to seal the victory. Freshman Collin O'Malley got his first shutout as Lion. The Lions are off this week to enjoy Thanksgiving, but will be back November 29th to face University of Utah at home.

Lions Play to a Draw at Staples...
The Lions took the ice vs a very strong UC Irvine Thursday night at Staples Center following the Kings vs. Ducks game. The Lions took a 3-1 lead into the third with goals from Ryan Rosales, Jason Zummo and Travis Amick. The Lions held the momentum going into the second break, but UCI took control in the third, knotting the score at 3 a piece. The game went to overtime but neither team could finish it, and it ended in a tie. Next up for the Lions, Saturday November 17 @ Pepperdine - 10:45PM
11/10/07
Lions Sweep Gonzaga...
The Lions finally turned it on Saturday in the second half of the Gonzaga series. Tied at zero going into the second, the Lions came out flying putting up five goals in the second period. Scoring for the Lions in the game were Sophmore Kyle Flynn, and Seniors Phil Higgins, Dave Maricondo, Jason Zummo and Tyler Goeckner-Zoeller. Zummo and Goeckner-Zoeller both netted two with Goeckner-Zoeller getting the game winning goal in both games of the series. Freshman goalie Collin O'Malley kept the Lions in it early with a handful of strong stops in the first. Next up for the Lions is a game vs. UC Irvine at Staples Center.
11/9/07
Lions Top WCC Rival...
The Lions did not play a very strong game, but still came out on top of WCC Rival Gonzaga. LMU could never get in rhythm as the game started out sloppy, ending the first period knotted at zero. Early in the second Senior Tyler Goeckner-Zoeller, in his first game back since September 29, received a pass from Freshman Travis Amick, broke past the D and roofed it over Gonzaga's goalie. The score was 1-0 after two, but not without many great saves by Senior goalie Chris Marks. Marks was ready for all Gonzaga opportunities, and always came up big. Late in the third the Lions, who had started to pick up the game, scored two more goals. Freshman Nick Cruz had a give and go goal with Grad Student Tim Chiappetta. Sophmore Jeremy Birenbaum scored a one timer in the final minutes on a pass from Travis Amick. The Lions take on the Zags again tomorrow, 11/10 at 4 PM at Bay Harbor Ice Rink.

Lions End Trip on Positive Note...
LMU took their second plane trip of the season to Utah to play three games over their fall break. After falling to an upstart University of Utah team, LMU took on UVSC. The game was head to head til the halfway mark when UVSC took control and won the game. After a days rest the Lions were ready to play and took on University of Utah for a second time. LMU jumped out to an early lead but a quick moving Utah team kept it close, eventually tying the game halfway in the third. The Lions kept on the pressure and finally got the winning goal with 1:36 left. Grad student Chris Miller chipped the puck down the ice and fed a flying Kyle Flynn to tip it home for the winner. Grad student Tim (HS) Chiappetta clinched the victory with an open net goal with half a minute left. LMU looks to continue their winning way in two weeks as they travel to UNLV. Last year the Lions split their series at UNLV. See you in Vegas...
10/12/07
Heartbreak at USC...
A day after a big win at their home opener, LMU went to USC to take on a team that has always had an easy time with the Lions. The Lions came out ready to go, scoring the first goal on a deflection early in the first. LMU went up 4-1 early in the second, and seemed to have all the momentum. However they could not stay out of the box, and USC's powerplay was unstoppable. The game ended up tied at 5-5 after the third period, with USC scoring all five of their goals on the Powerplay. LMU battled through a penalty early in OT, got a Powerplay of their own late in OT. Trying to move the puck towards the net in the last minute of OT, the puck took a bounce off USC and they scored short handed with 10 seconds left. The Lions played a great game and took a bad bounce to lose it. Goalie Chris Marks played a great game, keeping the Lions tied late in the third with many great diving saves. LMU looks to rebound and get back in the win column next weekend in Utah.
10/11/07
Lions Shine in Home Opener...
A Jam Packed Culver arena witnessed the Lions take on UCLA at their 2007-2008 home opener. The Lions didn't dissapoint as they came away with an 8-4 victory. For the first time all year LMU got on the board first with a goal from Freshman Nick Cruz. LMU built up a 5-1 lead, but UCLA started to charge back, coming within two goals again. Other LMU goals came from Dave Maricondo, Kyle Flynn, Corey Humphrey, Ryan Rosales and for the second game in a row, Charley Stauber. Senior Captain Phil Higgins played the biggest for the Lions, putting up 5 points on two goals and 3 assists. He factored into the first five LMU goals of the game. Thanks to all the screaming fans that came out to support the team. Next Home game is November 9th vs. Gonzaga.

LMU Prevails over UCLA ...
The Lions played their first game in Los Angeles late on Friday night at UCLA. LMU fans came out in force and cheered the Lions on to a 5-3 come back victory. The play was spread evenly among the Lions, with goals by Chris Miller, Nick Cruz, Tim Chiappetta, and the biggest goal coming from Freshman Charley Stauber. With the Lions down late in the game and looking for a spark, Stauber moved the puck in deep and found a seem in the crease for a one timer from Dave Maricondo. That goal tied the game at 3 and the Lions never looked back. LMU is back in action Thursday 10/11 for their home opener vs. UCLA. Photos

Lions Fall to Strong Idaho Squad...
The Lions took to the ice for the third day in a row, and met a strong University of Idaho team. LMU got down 3-0 as Idaho moved the puck around with speed. LMU countered in the second period bringing the game back to 3-3 with goals from freshmen Nick Cruz and Jeremy Birenbaum. Idaho took advantage of a tired LMU squad and finished them off. LMU finished the weekend an even .500. LMU's next game is this coming Friday at UCLA.

The Lions finish their trip tomorrow morning at 8:45 AM vs. University of Idaho.

Recieving the awards were Noah Freedman, SO. received the Most Improved Player award. Noah will be a threat next season for LMU. Pepperdine starts fast...
In the end, Pepperdine won the game 4-3. They came out fast and had 4 goals on a few key defensive mistakes vs. the Lions. LMU shook off the rust late in the 2nd and controlled the game from that point, scratching their way back into the game. The bad news for the Lions was Pepperdines goalie was a wall, taking away a number of great scoring chances for the Lions. The Lions finished off their inaugural season, and are looking forward to a great season next year.

Lions play final local team in close game...
LMU Ice Hockey played the last local team they had yet to play, Cal State Long Beach. LB the night before had taken on USC and beaten them, USC earlier having beaten the Lions. LMU came out ready to play and played strong the first period, only letting up one break which LB converted on. LMU had plenty of chances to score the entire game, but could not seem to put it in the net, with LB goalie Frankie Mitrano playing well. LB scored two goals in the 2nd and two in the 3rd, keeping the Lions off the board even though LMU had many chances. LMU's team has improved a lot since the beginning of the year, and now has two weeks to get ready to take their first trip of the year to Washington. Thanks to our die-hard fans who drove over an hour to cheer us on!

Lions show improvement in close loss...
LMU Ice Hockey showed a lot of improvement in their third game of the season. LMU jumped out to an early lead on Phil Higgins first goal of the year. Kyle Flynn had the assist as they both went crashing towards the net. UCLA came flying back with the next couple goals. Goeckner-Zoeller had his first goal of the season on a powerplay, as he walked it off the side boards and put it over the near side of UCLA's goalie. UCLA came back a few minutes later again. LMU tried to get it going again with Goeckner-Zoellers second goal of the game. LMU caused UCLA to turn the puck over behind their own net, Ryan Rosales picked up the lose puck, sent it to Tim Chiappetta who kicked it across the crease to Goeckner-Zoeller who burried it in an open net. Goalie Chris Marks once again had a solid showing, stopping 45 shots. LMU's passing was noticably better and their defense was better too, only letting down in the second for 2 quick UCLA goals. The Lions look to continue to improve and work their way towards their first win this Friday vs. Long Beach.

Although the score ended up in the wrong direction, the Lions are improving in their first season, and look to compete with UCLA when they take them on again this coming Wednesday, 10-4, at midnight (Thursday Morning).
