D3 taps Thomas and Smith to Lead

The LMU Hockey M3 team has tapped veteran coach Kahlil Thomas to lead the team starting in the 2025-26 season.  Thomas will be joined by David Smith, an exciting up and coming coach.  The team is thrilled to welcome this exciting coaching staff as we look to grow from our first season with an ACHA M3 team.

Kahlil Thomas –

Known for his versatile playstyle, leadership on and off the ice, and relentless work ethic, Thomas earned a reputation as a reliable and skilled forward throughout his career.

Over the course of his career, Thomas played for several top-tier teams across multiple leagues, including the AHL, ECHL, and European clubs. He was a key contributor to his teams’ successes, securing three professional championships during his career. Thomas’ career is a testament to the power of dedication and perseverance, and he remains a respected figure in the hockey community.

David Smith –

I take pride in bringing a competitive, structured, and player focused approach to the college level. I’m big on creating an environment where players embrace the system and understand their roles. I go into every game believing we have a chance to win and do everything I can to make sure our team is prepared, whether that’s through systems, video work, or 1 on 1 instruction. I prioritize accountability, structure, and a team first mentality. My approach emphasizes clear expectations, honest communication, and a culture of discipline both on and off the ice.

My coaching journey includes private goaltending instruction and early team roles with the Bakersfield Jr. Condors at the 12U and 14U levels. I went on to serve as an assistant coach with the Kern County Knights JV team, helping lead them to the 2021-2022 LAKHSHL Championship. From 2022 to 2024, I was the Assistant Coach of the Santa Clarita 18U AA team before being named Head Coach for the 2024-2025 season. Most recently, I launched the Valencia Voltage program over the spring and summer, focusing on building a competitive and high energy environment for players during the offseason.

At LMU, my focus is on building a strong system, a committed team culture, and a program that players are proud to be a part of year after year.
