Hall of Fame Coach Hyman Departs

Coach Hyman, who led the Lions as head coach for years, has informed the team he is departing.  Starting as a player, Jack Hyman led the Lions to back to back regionals as team captain.  He was selected to the LMU Hockey Hall of Fame in 2022.  A year after graduating, Coach Hyman returned as an assistant coach for three years, before taking over as head coach.  After a run of successful seasons, Jack picked up the all time wins record for a coach, and led the Lions to their first ACHA Regionals win in 2022.

“Jack has been amazing for this program, we wish him nothing but the best as he continues his coaching journey.” said General Manager Tyler Goeckner-Zoeller.  “While we’re sad to be losing such a valued member of the program, we’re happy for Jack.  When Jack first came to LMU as a freshman in 2011, you could tell he was a great leader.  We were fortunate to get to be associated with him for so many successful and fun seasons.  Wherever he next lands, that team is sure to have a steady and smart leader.”

Coach Hyman released the following statement; “It is with mixed emotions that I announce that I have decided to resign as head hockey coach of Loyola Marymount University as I embark on a new chapter of my hockey career. This announcement is not an easy one to make. I have spent the last 11 years with LMU, as a player and coach, and I have loved every minute of it. If you told me when I was growing up back in New England that I would end up playing college hockey in California and then becoming the Head Coach of that very same team, I never would have believed you. It has truly been an incredible and memorable journey that I am extremely grateful for.

I owe a huge thank you to LMU’s General Manger, Tyler Goeckner- Zoeller. When I decided I wanted to attend LMU, Tyler helped me gain admission way past the application deadline date. After I graduated, he took a chance on me as Assistant Coach, then as Head Coach. I have learned so much from Tyler and am grateful to have grown as a coach because of him. No one cares more about LMU hockey than Tyler and I have no doubt the program will continue to grow as long as he is in charge.

Throughout my years at LMU, we have been through it all. Starting with a 6-win season, to a 20-win season just two years later, then winning League Championship and making it to the second round of the Regional Tournament three years after that. When taking over as Head Coach, my goal was to strengthen the standards and expectations surrounding LMU hockey. Looking back on my 7 years as a coach, it is truly amazing to see how the culture has changed. Thanks to the players tireless efforts, I am proud to say that LMU is now a hockey school.

Thank you to all the players and staff who have been by my side all these years. Records and wins aside, you made my coaching experience unforgettable. The memories I have made with you all will last forever. I asked you to give me your all and you exceeded my expectations. Gentlemen, please continue working hard and showing the hockey community that LMU is serious about hockey. You will make a difference for future Lions. It has been a pleasure coaching you and I will miss you all; I love you like family.
I truly wish the LMU hockey program, and everyone involved nothing but success.
Sincerely, Jack Hyman”

The Lions have started the process to identify the best coach to take over the ACHA D2 program, and are also looking for a coach for the first year D3 program.
